Australian authorities have strengthened their scrutiny of visa applicants from four South Asian countries due to rampant degree fraud. As of January, the evidence level for applicants from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan has been adjusted from Level 2 (EL2) to Level 3 (EL3). This change means that student visa applicants from these four countries must now provide additional documentation, including three months of bank statements, detailed information about their available funds, and officially certified transcripts. This latest change was made at the request of the Department of Education and the Australian Federal Police, who are concerned about reports of a massive fraudulent degree ring in India.
