During Hong Kong Streetathon 2025, the organizers attempted to use new technology to expedite the luggage claim process, aiming to reduce waiting times. However, the system failed to recognize the QR codes at one point. Despite multiple system tests conducted before the event and backup scanners on hand, the situation was not as anticipated.

In IT project management, risk management is an extremely important component that involves various projects. In recent years, risk management has focused more on preventing cybersecurity issues, which has led many new projects to reduce attention to preparing contingency plans for potential system failures.

In this incident, if we continue to use traditional methods of storing luggage in numerical order, even in the event of a system failure, staff can still effectively locate stored items. There can be many causes for system failures, including network issues, traffic problems, coding errors, and infrastructure shortcomings. To date, we cannot prevent system failures 100%, so although the term “contingency plan” may seem outdated, we must not overlook its importance.
