Every time you read headlines about how powerful AI has become, you look back at your Excel sheets, meeting minutes, and endless paperwork…

Do you feel a sudden wave of panic? Do you worry that you are only feeling this crisis because you are just an ordinary person?

Don’t be so quick to doubt yourself. This panic is a collective, natural human reaction to a technology that feels out of control. Even the top elites on the frontline of tech—those least likely to lose their jobs—are filled with deep anxiety.

The BBC recently interviewed graduates from Stanford University. Most of them have already secured jobs or are heading to graduate school. Outsiders often describe a Stanford degree as a golden ticket straight to a top career in tech. Yet, surprisingly, even these tech elites feel lost and resistant toward the runaway speed of AI:

🌍 Helplessness over Environment & Future
Colbey Harlan, a psychology major, admits that data centers consume too many resources and energy. He laments: “AI is cool, but can we just stop developing it? If we keep going, things will get out of hand.”

🎨 Doubts about Art & Humanity
Atash Heil, an environmental science major, found AI-generated art terrifying: “The future world… is this it? I want art to be made by humans. That’s the essence of art, isn’t it?” He feels AI is not being developed ethically right now.

🎓 Anxiety over Education & the Next Generation
Lucy Zimmerman, a computer science TA, noticed that many students might be using AI for assignments, leading to huge gaps between homework and actual test scores. Some classes have even been forced to bring back in-person proctoring and oral exams to prevent cheating. The rapid rise of AI also leaves her worried about her own future and the next generation.

When even these secure, top-tier elites suffer from mental burnout and wish technology would just slow down, what does that tell us?

It shows that your helplessness and fear toward AI have absolutely nothing to do with you being “ordinary” or “lacking ambition.” It certainly doesn’t mean you are worthless. It simply proves that the pace of this technology has far exceeded what humans and social structures can adapt to.

Whether we like it or not, AI is changing the world. But we don’t need to force ourselves to become AI experts overnight. Steady your pace, explore this new tool step by step, and protect your mental resilience. That is how we navigate these turbulent waters and come out on top.
