🍼 The Office Playpen | Speaking passionately in meetings, only to be labelled “too emotional”? Do colleagues say you’re impossible to talk to?
Have you ever tried to have a serious, genuine, and direct discussion during a meeting, only to be labelled “emotional” or “incapable of rational discussion” just because you spoke passionately?
Are you really being irrational? Does a rational discussion actually mean talking without any emotion whatsoever?
💢 Myth 1: “I don’t like what I’m hearing = You’re being irrational”
The unvarnished truth often sounds harsh, making others feel threatened. To escape this emotional “discomfort,” people will accuse you of being “irrational”—effectively shifting the focus from solving the problem to policing your attitude.
💢 Myth 2: “Etiquette” over “Truth”
For many, workplace etiquette (respecting hierarchy, saving the boss’s face, sugarcoating words) is valued even more than the truth. When you break these unwritten rules, others activate their psychological defense mechanisms and instantly slap the “emotional” label on you.
🎯 Labelled as “emotional”? Besides feeling frustrated, what can you do?
- Examine yourself: Are you sticking to the facts (rational discussion)? Or are you just feeling resentful because you were contradicted (emotional discussion)? If you are rational, work on your delivery method.
- You can’t choose your colleagues: Whether your colleagues are open-minded or dead serious, you rarely get a choice. At the end of the day, everyone is just here to make a living. The most important thing is delivering results.
- Find a way to communicate: The person labelling you clearly dislikes your direct approach. If you need to cooperate, adjustment is necessary. Next time you deal with them, remember to be extra polite.
- Why should YOU be the one to change? Learning to express yourself tactfully doesn’t mean you are wrong. It simply means you are more mature, willing to accommodate others, and unwilling to waste time on pointless arguments. You are still you—you are simply learning how to handle different types of people.
💡 Understanding True “Rational Discussion”
Rational discussion isn’t about turning into soulless robots; it means not letting your emotions hijack your logic. You can express viewpoints with passion or anger, as long as your arguments remain fact-based, logically sound, and you listen to the other side.
Conversely, someone can be perfectly friendly and emotionless, but if their goal is just to vent frustration, view differing opinions as personal provocations, or seek validation instead of the truth—that, too, is an emotional discussion.
The word “emotion” carries a negative connotation in Hong Kong society. However, emotions reflect our core values, drive us forward, and provide the foundation for humanized decisions.
