🍼 The Office Playpen | No Policy Means No Flexibility? Handling Exceptions: How a Water Outage & World Cup Test Your Leadership!
Two major events happened this Sunday. They seem unrelated to work, but the moment you step into the office tomorrow, your workplace relationships will be put to the test.
💦 Event 1: Shau Kei Wan Water Outage – Will there be water by 6 AM tomorrow?
A sudden water outage hit Shau Kei Wan, affecting a massive number of residents. Water supplies might resume at 6 AM tomorrow at the earliest. No shower tonight, no guarantee of brushing teeth tomorrow—everyone is left in limbo.
- 💡 What You Can Do: Even if top management has no special arrangements, as a direct supervisor, you can take the initiative. Send a message tonight to check in on subordinates in the affected area: “Are you okay? How are things looking for tomorrow morning?…”
- ❤️ True trust is built on these exact details. When you go the extra mile to show care, their loyalty increases tenfold.
⚽ Event 2: World Cup Final Ends at 5 AM – Is someone bound to “call in sick” tomorrow?
Tonight’s World Cup final goes on until 5 AM. Who will be on time, who will be late, or who will “pull a sickie”? We all know the deal.
- 💡 What You Can Do: If you have open communication with your team, you will already know who might call in sick. Your subordinates would have coordinated with you in advance to take leave or swap shifts.
- ❤️ If a subordinate unexpectedly calls in sick without a heads-up, it shows your relationship is just average. But that’s okay. Don’t confront them immediately. Say nothing for now, let it slide, and gradually find opportunities to rebuild that connection later.
If you do these, don’t wonder why your subordinates dislike you:
❌ Settling Scores: Accepting the medical certificate but targeting them in future tasks.
❌ Emotional Blackmail: Making passive-aggressive remarks in front of others: “Oh, look who’s sick today. What perfect timing.”
❌ One-Size-Fits-All: Revoking all future flexibility for the entire team just because of one person.
