According to the new mechanism of the statutory minimum wage “annual review,” the government has published a notice to raise the statutory minimum wage from the current $42.1 per hour to $43.1. This amendment will be submitted to the Legislative Council on 25 Feb, and if approved, the new minimum wage will take effect on 1 May 2026. During this period, companies need to prepare for the following five transitions:
🎯 Review Current Employee Salary Levels
Develop a salary adjustment plan, paying special attention to marginal employees whose hourly wage is above $43.1 but below $50.
🎯 Update Financial Budgets
The budget must include at least a 2.38% increase in expenditure, taking into account not only the rise in labour costs due to salary adjustments but also the accompanying inflation increase.
🎯 Pre-emptively Adjust Payroll Systems to Set Minimum Wage Levels
Most payroll systems on the market have features that automatically apply subsidies based on minimum wage levels. Relevant settings can be adjusted in advance to automatically apply on the effective date, helping to avoid forgetting to make changes in May.
🎯 Monitor Market Wage Adjustments After May 1
Timely report market changes to management to stay informed of the latest recruitment costs or seek alternative productivity-enhancing solutions.
🎯 Proactively Communicate the Latest Arrangements to Employees
After any adjustment to the minimum wage, employees often have various questions, which can result in a high volume of inquiries. Proactive communication can reduce the number of queries and help establish a positive image for the company.
