In the past six months, there have been six cases of individuals with fake qualifications jumping bail. When those involved are undeterred by forfeiting their bail money or arrest warrants, how can we deter other criminals?
Looking back at recent news reports, when those accused of forgery are charged with making false statements, they are usually granted bail pending trial. Unfortunately, regardless of whether the bail amounts are in the tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or even approaching a million, there have been a total of six cases of individuals jumping bail within this timeframe. Even with arrest warrants issued, these individuals have already fled, and unless they re-enter Hong Kong, pursuing them for further court proceedings seems highly unlikely. Given their backgrounds, it’s virtually no big deal for them to avoid returning to Hong Kong for the rest of their lives.
When offenders are not afraid of forfeiting their bail money or facing arrest warrants, and when the consequences are manageable for them, fake qualifications will only become more rampant. Data shows that the number of suspected fake qualification cases has skyrocketed from a few discovered in the past to thousands today. As long as admissions, recruitment, and application approval teams show even the slightest negligence, forgers will get what they want.
