A new trend called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is emerging. In this practice, businesses pay GEO firms to use AI to generate massive amounts of professional-looking but factually unreliable content. The goal is to manipulate AI models so that when they answer consumer queries, they directly cite this unverified information, effectively “infecting” the AI’s output.
These GEO companies openly claim they can “infect” China’s 8 major AI platforms—including DeepSeek, Doubao, Ernie Bot (Wenxin Yiyan), Yuanbao, Kimi, Nano AI, Tongyi Qianwen, and Zhipu Qingyan—as well as 12 social media platforms such as Xiaohongshu, Douyin, and Zhihu.
When AI—a revolutionary tool of our era—becomes “severely infected” by low-quality, false, and profit-driven content, its original objectivity and neutrality will vanish. If the answers provided by AI can no longer be trusted, will this new era of search reach an abrupt end?
