(First-Expired, First-Out)
According to reports, the Hospital Authority’s Pharmacy Department has introduced a smart pharmacy inventory system. William Chui, Chief Pharmacist of the Hospital Authority, stated at a press conference: “We introduce automated systems with the patient as our ultimate goal. It is for the patient, not because we want to adopt high tech just for the sake of it.” Although Mr. Chui’s past remarks have sparked controversies, in this digital transformation project, he has indeed pointed out the very first prerequisite for successful implementation—a clear objective.
A recent BBC report highlighted that many organizations rush to emphasize their AI adoption without clarifying why they are using it or what benefits they expect to achieve. For instance, at an oil and gas company, when asked why they were implementing AI, the management fell into silence. Later, different executives provided completely different answers: the CEO wanted to keep up with competitors, the sales head wanted to generate more revenue, and the marketing team hoped to stop using external contractors. This alignment confusion among top executives often prevents tech investments from delivering expected results. Based on our observations, even more organizations get lost in the continuous pursuit of various high-tech gimmicks, never truly setting sail for digital transformation.
Of course, the actual effectiveness of the smart pharmacy system remains to be evaluated by the public. However, when driving digital transformation, other organizations might want to learn from this and reflect: what is the true objective of pushing this project forward?
Hospital Authority Pharmacy Department Digital Transformation Project
- 🎯 Core Objective: Free up time for frontline pharmacists to care for patients and shorten patient waiting times.
- ⚙️ Tech Application: Inventory management system, barcode scanning, semi-automated dispensing machines, and robotics.
- ⏳ Initial Trial Results: During the trial at the North District Family Medicine Integrated Centre, prescription dispensing time was cut from 10–25 minutes down to just a few minutes. Ten public hospitals have introduced semi-automated dispensing machines, which can dispense 30 pills within 5 seconds.
- ✨ Side Benefits: Real-time inventory tracking, ensuring medications are dispatched in order of expiration (First-Expired, First-Out / FEFO).
- 📍 Future Goal: Setting up automated dispensing machines for common medications (e.g., painkillers, standard lubricating eye drops) by the end of 2026 at the earliest.
