How many meetings do you all find yourselves in? Lately, I’ve been chatting with peers in the industry, and it seems like we’re all noticing that meetings are piling up. For example:
📅 Monthly Management Meetings – Every month, we have a management meeting. Back in the day, each department would whip up some data for their manager, who would create a report for the big meeting. Now? The whole team gathers for two pre-meetings to prepare a report for the manager.
📅 Sales Updates – Software folks usually have less frequent signings, meet once a week, while hardware folks usually meet more frequently. Lately, I’ve heard that some companies are holding sales updates twice a day—once in the morning and once in the evening. Management thinks they’ve arranged it in a more humanized way, because salespeople don’t have to trek back to the office for meetings.
📅 Special Meetings – These are for serious stuff—like big customer complaints, things the boss is worried about, or projects that are way behind schedule. When an ad-hoc issue pops up, everyone groans because it usually means a ton of meetings. For example, if sales receive a big complaint, they first have an internal meeting to figure things out. Then they invite the higher-ups, along with the project, product, and support teams, to sync up. After that, the higher-ups assign tasks, and suddenly, we’re meeting every day to check on progress. Before we meet the customer to explain things, there’s usually another pre-meeting to rehearse. Since the rehearsal involves different departments, each department often has to hold a pre-rehearsal meeting…
So, have all these extra meetings really helped us solve problems faster? Is work any smoother? Are we any happier?
